Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 0.5 cups Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 gallon Water
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (optional, for serving)
  • 1 cup Crumbled bacon or sautéed cabbage (optional, for serving)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh herbs (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.

Step 2

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and crack in the eggs. Add the milk.

Step 3

Using a wooden spoon or whisk, mix until a thick, sticky dough forms. It should be slightly thicker than pancake batter. Add a little more milk if it's too dry.

Step 4

Bring 1 gallon of salted water to a boil in a large pot.

Step 5

Using a halušky maker, colander with large holes, or a spaetzle press, press small portions of the dough directly into the boiling water. If you don't have these tools, you can use a wet spoon to drop small pieces of dough into the water.

Step 6

Cook the dumplings for 2-3 minutes, or until they float to the surface.

Step 7

Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked dumplings to a colander or a serving bowl.

Step 8

If desired, toss the dumplings with butter and garnish with crumbled bacon, sautéed cabbage, or fresh herbs for serving.

Step 9

Serve warm and enjoy!
