Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter, optional (for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned and no longer pink. This should take about 7-8 minutes.

Step 2

Drain any excess grease from the skillet and return it to the stove.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the ground beef and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the onion is softened and translucent.

Step 4

Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, chili powder, tomato paste, water, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together and the sauce to thicken.

Step 6

While the beef mixture is simmering, optionally toast the hamburger buns: Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat and toast the cut sides of the buns until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 7

Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the hamburger buns, then top with the other halves. Serve warm and enjoy!
