Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) Unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup Light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon Apple cider vinegar
  • 6 medium Apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 package (two 9-inch crusts) Premade pie dough
  • 1 whole Large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Milk
  • 1 tablespoon Coarse sugar (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

In a large cast-iron skillet (10-12 inches), melt the butter over medium heat. As it melts, swirl occasionally until golden brown and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 3

Add granulated sugar, light brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the skillet. Stir constantly until the sugars dissolve and begin to caramelize, about 2 minutes. Stir in the apple cider vinegar.

Step 4

Add the sliced apples to the skillet and toss to coat in the caramel mixture. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples start to soften.

Step 5

Sprinkle in the all-purpose flour and toss until the filling thickens slightly, about 1 minute. Remove the skillet from heat and let the apples cool slightly.

Step 6

Unroll one piece of pie dough and gently lay it over the cooled apple mixture in the skillet. Tuck any excess dough along the edges under itself to form a crust edge. Use a sharp knife to cut small slits in the dough to allow steam to escape.

Step 7

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk to create an egg wash. Brush the top of the crust with the egg wash, and sprinkle coarse sugar on top, if desired, for added texture and sweetness.

Step 8

Place the skillet onto a sheet pan (to catch any drips) and transfer to the oven. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Step 9

Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the pie to cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the ultimate treat.
