Ingredients

  • 12 sheets lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce (canned)
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and lay flat on a clean surface to prevent sticking.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, and diced onion until browned. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Season with basil, oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Simmer the sauce on low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, egg, and chopped parsley until well combined. Set aside.

Step 6

Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of the dish.

Step 7

Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping them. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella and 1/3 cup of grated Parmesan over it.

Step 8

Repeat the layers twice more: meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, and Parmesan.

Step 9

Finish with a final layer of meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Step 10

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (avoid letting the foil touch the cheese to prevent sticking). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 11

Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 12

Let the lasagna cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with a side salad or garlic bread if desired.
