Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 250 g ground pork
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 0.5 tsp allspice
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined, but avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.

Step 2

Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. This should yield around 24-30 meatballs.

Step 3

In a large skillet or frying pan, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook each batch for 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and fully cooked. Remove the meatballs and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels.

Step 4

In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

Step 5

Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken slightly.

Step 6

Stir in the heavy cream, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for another 2-3 minutes, adjusting the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if necessary.

Step 7

Return the cooked meatballs to the skillet, coating them evenly with the gravy. Let them simmer in the sauce for 5 minutes to absorb the flavors.

Step 8

Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, if desired, and serve the Swedish meatballs warm over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
