Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 0.5 cup golden raisins
  • 0.75 cup milk (preferably whole)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash, optional)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

Stir in the golden raisins to evenly distribute them throughout the mixture.

Step 5

In a separate bowl, combine the milk and vanilla extract. Gradually pour this into the dry mixture, mixing gently with a fork until just combined and the dough starts to come together. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick.

Step 7

Using a sharp knife or a bench scraper, cut the circle into 8 wedges. Transfer the wedges to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.

Step 8

For a golden finish, prepare an optional egg wash by whisking the egg with the water. Brush the tops of the scones lightly with the egg wash.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and cooked through.

Step 10

Remove the scones from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
