Ingredients

  • 1 cup Milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the milk in a small saucepan over low heat until warm but not scalding (about 110°F or 43°C). Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of butter until melted. Add the sugar and stir to combine. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk mixture and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk mixture and the beaten egg. Stir the mixture until it forms a sticky dough.

Step 3

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time, if the dough is too sticky.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 5

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced slightly apart. Cover with the kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
