Ingredients

  • 300 grams Blackberries
  • 3 medium Apples (Granny Smith or similar tart variety)
  • 100 grams Caster sugar
  • 25 grams All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 500 grams Shortcrust pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Water
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).

Step 2

Peel, core, and dice the apples into small cubes. Rinse the blackberries gently under cold water and pat them dry.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the apples, blackberries, caster sugar, flour, and ground cinnamon. Stir until the fruit is evenly coated.

Step 4

On a lightly floured surface, roll out two-thirds of the shortcrust pastry into a circle large enough to line a 9-inch pie dish. Carefully transfer the pastry to the dish, pressing it into the edges.

Step 5

Trim any excess pastry hanging over the edges, but leave a small overhang for sealing the pie later.

Step 6

Spoon the fruit filling into the pastry-lined pie dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 7

Roll out the remaining third of the pastry into a circle large enough to cover the pie. Gently place it over the fruit filling.

Step 8

Seal and crimp the edges of the pie by pinching the pastry together or pressing with a fork. Use a small knife to trim any excess pastry.

Step 9

Cut a few small slits in the top of the pastry to allow steam to escape while baking.

Step 10

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush it over the top of the pie.

Step 11

Sprinkle the top of the pie with granulated sugar for a crispy, golden finish.

Step 12

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbling.

Step 13

Allow the pie to cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy warm or cold, optionally with cream, custard, or vanilla ice cream.
