Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks. Measure out 6 cups of chopped apples.

Step 2

Place the chopped apples into a slow cooker and add water. Stir to combine.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, mix the granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt.

Step 4

Sprinkle the sugar-spice mixture over the apples in the slow cooker. Stir well to coat the apples evenly.

Step 5

Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and caramelized. If the mixture becomes too thick, you can add a tablespoon or two of water to loosen it.

Step 6

Once the apples are very soft, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth and creamy. Alternatively, carefully transfer the mixture in batches to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Return the puree to the slow cooker if needed.

Step 7

Stir in the vanilla extract and taste. Adjust seasonings or sweetness if desired.

Step 8

Leave the lid slightly ajar and cook on low for another 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apple butter is thick enough to hold its shape on a spoon.

Step 9

Turn off the heat and let the apple butter cool slightly. Transfer to sterilized jars or airtight containers for storage.

Step 10

Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Serve as a spread for bread, muffins, or biscuits, or use as a flavorful ingredient in baking recipes.
