Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.75 cups Warm water
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) Active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 cups Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 teaspoons Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 cups Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 10 leaves Fresh basil leaves

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture is foamy.

Step 2

Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine, then knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 3

Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl, turning the dough to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until it has doubled in size.

Step 4

While the dough is rising, make the tomato sauce by combining the crushed tomatoes, oregano, garlic powder, and black pepper in a saucepan. Simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).

Step 6

Lightly oil a large rectangular baking sheet or Sicilian pizza pan. Punch down the risen dough and spread it out evenly in the pan, making sure to stretch it to the edges with your fingers.

Step 7

Let the dough rest in the pan for an additional 30 minutes to allow it to rise slightly.

Step 8

Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the crust, leaving a small border around the edges.

Step 9

Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce, followed by the grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before slicing and serving.
