Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes (prepared or homemade)
  • 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil.

Step 2

Add the ground beef or lamb and cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles with a spoon. Drain any excess fat if necessary.

Step 3

Add the diced onion and carrots to the skillet. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring often, until the vegetables are softened.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, flour, salt, and pepper. Stir well to coat the meat and vegetables.

Step 6

Pour in the beef broth and stir. Simmer the mixture for 5-7 minutes, until it thickens into a rich sauce.

Step 7

Stir in the frozen peas and remove the skillet from the heat.

Step 8

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat and vegetable mixture in the skillet, creating a smooth layer.

Step 9

If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the mashed potatoes.

Step 10

Place the skillet under the broiler for 3-5 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly. Watch closely to prevent burning.

Step 11

Carefully remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.
