Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground lamb or ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef or chicken stock
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 0 to taste salt
  • 0 to taste black pepper
  • 2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or grated
  • 0.5 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground lamb or beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 3

Add the diced onions, carrots, and celery to the pan. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.

Step 4

Stir in the garlic and tomato paste. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the meat and vegetable mixture. Stir well to coat, and cook for another minute.

Step 6

Gradually pour in the stock while stirring. Add the Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 7

Stir in the frozen peas and remove the filling from heat. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 8

Meanwhile, place the cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain well.

Step 9

Mash the potatoes with the butter, cream or milk, and garlic until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 10

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture in the baking dish. Use a fork to create a textured surface. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.

Step 11

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
