Ingredients

  • 4 large Russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 14 ounces Canned cream-style corn
  • 14 ounces Canned whole kernel corn, drained
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 cup Cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the russet potatoes and cut them into chunks. Place them in a large pot, cover with water, and boil until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.

Step 2

While the potatoes are boiling, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, about 8-10 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of salt, black pepper, and paprika. Cook for another 2 minutes.

Step 4

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 5

Drain the boiled potatoes and mash them with unsalted butter, milk, and the remaining 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Adjust the seasoning as needed for taste, and set aside.

Step 6

Spread the cooked ground beef mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 7

Layer the cream-style corn evenly over the ground beef, followed by the whole kernel corn.

Step 8

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the corn layers, smoothing the top with a spoon or spatula.

Step 9

If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the mashed potatoes for a cheesy crust.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are bubbling and the top is slightly golden. If using cheese, broil for 2-3 minutes at the end to fully melt and brown the cheese.

Step 11

Allow the dish to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy your Quebec-style Pâté Chinois!
