Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Ground beef or lamb
  • 1 large Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced
  • 1 cup Frozen peas
  • 1 cup Beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Flour
  • 4 cups Mashed potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or lamb until browned. Drain off any excess fat if needed.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion and diced carrots to the skillet. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the vegetables begin to soften.

Step 4

Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 5

Add the beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and bring to a simmer.

Step 6

Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.

Step 7

Stir in the frozen peas and remove from heat.

Step 8

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish (or two smaller dishes if you plan to freeze some for later). Spread the meat and vegetable mixture evenly over the bottom of the dish.

Step 9

Top the meat layer with the mashed potatoes, spreading them evenly to cover the filling completely.

Step 10

Dot the mashed potatoes with butter and optionally sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges.

Step 12

Let the Shepherd’s Pie cool for 10 minutes before serving.
