Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground lamb
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and finely diced
  • 2 stalks celery stalks, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1.5 cups beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared with butter and cream)
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 to taste salt
  • 1 to taste black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the ground beef and ground lamb, cooking until browned, about 5–7 minutes.

Step 4

Remove the meat with a slotted spoon and set aside, draining excess fat from the skillet if needed.

Step 5

In the same skillet, add the onion, carrots, and celery. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 6

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 7

Add the tomato paste to the skillet and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

Step 8

Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir well, cooking for another minute.

Step 9

Slowly add the beef stock, stirring to combine and gradually thickening the mixture.

Step 10

Mix in the cooked meat, Worcestershire sauce, peas, and thyme. Simmer for 5–7 minutes and season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Step 11

Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Step 12

Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat filling, spreading them into an even layer.

Step 13

Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the mashed potatoes.

Step 14

Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Step 15

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
