Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or lamb)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 4 russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 0.5 cup milk (or cream)
  • 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

Peel and dice the potatoes into even-sized cubes. Place them in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes or until tender.

Step 3

While the potatoes are cooking, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and carrots, and sauté for 5 minutes, or until softened.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and ground beef (or lamb) to the skillet. Cook until the meat is browned and no longer pink, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste, then sprinkle the flour over the meat mixture. Stir well to coat.

Step 6

Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens. Stir in the frozen peas and season with salt and pepper.

Step 7

Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, then mash until smooth. Season with salt to taste.

Step 8

Transfer the meat mixture into a baking dish and spread it out evenly. Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading them to cover the meat completely. Optionally, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

Step 9

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
