Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 150 grams frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 250 ml beef or chicken stock
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 800 grams potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 50 grams butter
  • 120 ml milk
  • 100 grams cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 to taste salt
  • 1 to taste black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the potatoes and cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender.

Step 3

While the potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 4

Add the chopped onion, carrots, celery, and garlic. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened.

Step 5

Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, about 7-10 minutes.

Step 6

Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw taste.

Step 7

Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and beef or chicken stock, and bring to a simmer.

Step 8

Add the frozen peas, stir well, and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Allow the mixture to simmer for 5-10 minutes until slightly thickened.

Step 9

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them and return them to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and black pepper, then mash until smooth and creamy.

Step 10

Pour the meat and vegetable filling into a baking dish (approximately 9x9 inches).

Step 11

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top of the meat filling, smoothing the surface with a spatula.

Step 12

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the mashed potatoes for a golden, cheesy crust.

Step 13

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Step 14

Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Step 15

Serve warm and enjoy!
