Ingredients

  • 0.75 cups Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.75 cups Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cups Molasses
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon Ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar (for decoration)
  • 2 tablespoons Milk (for decoration icing)
  • 0 Food coloring (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Step 2

Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract to the bowl and mix until well combined.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough comes together.

Step 5

Divide the dough into two portions, flatten them into disks, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until firm.

Step 6

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 7

On a floured surface, roll out one portion of the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.

Step 8

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9

For the decoration icing, mix powdered sugar and milk together until smooth. If desired, divide the icing into small bowls and add food coloring to create festive colors.

Step 10

Once the cookies are completely cooled, decorate them with the icing using a piping bag or a small spoon. Allow the icing to set before serving.
