Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground beef or mutton
  • 100 grams Split Bengal gram (chana dal)
  • 4 pieces Garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger
  • 3 pieces Green chilies
  • 1 medium-sized, chopped Onion
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste) Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garam masala
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped Fresh coriander leaves
  • 1 large Egg
  • 4 tablespoons (for frying) Oil
  • 2 cups Water

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the split Bengal gram (chana dal) thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes prior to cooking.

Step 2

In a large pot or pressure cooker, combine the ground meat, soaked chana dal, garlic, ginger, green chilies, chopped onion, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, salt, black pepper, and 2 cups of water.

Step 3

Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the water has evaporated and the lentils have softened (approximately 25-30 minutes). If using a pressure cooker, cook for 15-20 minutes after the first whistle.

Step 4

Once the mixture has cooled slightly, transfer it to a food processor or blender. Pulse until a coarse, paste-like consistency is achieved. Avoid making it too smooth.

Step 5

Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Add garam masala, fresh coriander leaves, and the egg. Mix thoroughly to combine.

Step 6

Shape the mixture into small, flat patties (approx. 2-3 inches in diameter). Ensure the patties are uniform for even cooking.

Step 7

Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Fry the patties in batches, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.

Step 8

Drain the fried Shami 5fix patties on a paper towel to remove excess oil.

Step 9

Serve hot with your choice of chutney, ketchup, or yogurt dip. These also pair well with naan or paratha.
