Ingredients

  • 2 pieces (6 ounces each) tuna steaks
  • 3 tablespoons white sesame seeds
  • 3 tablespoons black sesame seeds
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon (grated) fresh ginger
  • 1 minced garlic clove
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 stalk (thinly sliced, for garnish) green onion

Directions

Step 1

Pat the tuna steaks dry with paper towels and set them aside.

Step 2

In a shallow dish, combine the white and black sesame seeds. Mix to distribute evenly.

Step 3

Press each side of the tuna steaks into the sesame seed mixture to coat them entirely. Set aside.

Step 4

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, grated ginger, and minced garlic to make the dipping sauce. Set aside.

Step 5

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil.

Step 6

Once the skillet is hot, carefully place the sesame-crusted tuna steaks in the pan. Sear for about 1-2 minutes on each side until the sesame seeds are golden and the tuna is cooked to your desired doneness (ideally medium-rare).

Step 7

Remove the tuna steaks from the skillet and let them rest for a minute before slicing.

Step 8

Slice the tuna steaks into thin strips and arrange them on a plate.

Step 9

Garnish with sliced green onion and serve with the Japanese dipping sauce on the side.
