Ingredients

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped (optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the white rice under cold water in a fine mesh sieve until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. This ensures a fluffier texture.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic to the saucepan and sauté for about 30 seconds, stirring frequently, until fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the uncooked white rice, and toast it in the saucepan for 2 minutes, stirring constantly to coat the grains in the oil and butter.

Step 5

Add the water to the pan and stir in the onion powder, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 6

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.

Step 7

After 15 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the rice to finish steaming.

Step 8

Fluff the rice gently with a fork, taste, and adjust seasoning if needed.

Step 9

Transfer the seasoned rice to a serving bowl and garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired. Serve warm.
