Ingredients

  • 2 pieces (6 oz each) fresh tuna steaks
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 medium-sized ripe tomatoes
  • 0.25 cups (diced) red onion
  • 2 tablespoons (chopped) cilantro
  • 1 small (seeded and finely diced) jalapeño pepper
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt (for salsa)
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper (for salsa)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, prepare the salsa by combining the diced tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice, 0.25 teaspoons of salt, and 0.25 teaspoons of black pepper. Stir well and set aside to let the flavors meld.

Step 2

Pat the tuna steaks dry with paper towels. Rub both sides of each steak with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, then season evenly with 0.5 teaspoons of salt and 0.5 teaspoons of black pepper.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet or grill pan over high heat until very hot, about 2 minutes.

Step 4

Add the tuna steaks to the hot pan and sear for 1-2 minutes per side for rare to medium-rare doneness, or cook longer to your preference. Be careful not to overcook, as tuna can become dry.

Step 5

Remove the tuna steaks from the pan and let them rest for 2 minutes.

Step 6

Serve each tuna steak topped with a generous scoop of the prepared salsa. Garnish with extra cilantro if desired.

Step 7

Enjoy immediately with a side of rice, salad, or steamed vegetables, if preferred.
