Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 medium, finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves, minced garlic
  • 50 grams rolled oats
  • 50 ml milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
  • 250 ml beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon stoneground mustard
  • 100 ml heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats and milk. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to soften.

Step 2

Add the ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, parsley, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. Mix gently but thoroughly to combine all the ingredients evenly.

Step 3

Roll the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs, approximately 16-18 in total, and set aside on a plate.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Sear until browned on all sides, about 6-8 minutes, then remove and set aside. The meatballs don't need to be fully cooked at this stage as they'll finish cooking in the sauce.

Step 5

In the same skillet, leave about 1 tablespoon of oil and stir in the all-purpose flour. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the beef stock, whisking as you go to ensure no lumps form. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 7

Stir in the mustard and heavy cream, mixing until the sauce is smooth and creamy.

Step 8

Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let them simmer in the sauce over low heat for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked and tender.

Step 9

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper, if needed.

Step 10

Serve the Scottish meatballs hot, garnished with additional parsley if desired, alongside mashed potatoes or crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.
