Nutrition Facts for Scottish crumpets

Scottish Crumpets

Soft, golden, and wonderfully light, Scottish Crumpets are a delightful twist on traditional crumpets, perfect for a cozy breakfast or teatime snack. Made with simple ingredients like all-purpose flour, milk, and a touch of sugar, these easy-to-make crumpets are pan-cooked to create their signature fluffy texture and lightly crisped edges. Unlike their yeast-leavened English counterparts, Scottish Crumpets rely on baking powder for a quick and fuss-free rise, making them a time-saving alternative without compromising on charm or flavor. Ready in just 30 minutes, they’re best served fresh and warm with a generous spread of butter, jam, or even a drizzle of honey. Whether you enjoy them as a morning treat or an afternoon pick-me-up, this traditional Scottish recipe is sure to bring a taste of authentic comfort to your table.

Ingredients

  • 225 grams All-purpose flour
  • 25 grams Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 300 ml Milk
  • 25 grams Butter
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder to ensure even mixing.

Step 2

In a pan, gently heat the milk and butter over low heat until the butter is melted. Set aside to cool slightly.

Step 3

In a separate small bowl, beat the egg. Once the milk mixture has cooled (it should be warm but not hot), whisk in the beaten egg.

Step 4

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and slowly pour in the wet mixture, whisking continuously to form a smooth batter. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 5

Heat a non-stick frying pan or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of vegetable oil to lightly grease the surface.

Step 6

Spoon about 2 tablespoons of batter per crumpet onto the pan, shaping it into a roughly round or oval shape. Cook for 2–3 minutes, or until bubbles appear on the surface and the edges start to set.

Step 7

Flip the crumpets and cook for another 2 minutes until golden and cooked through. Adjust the heat as needed to avoid burning.

Step 8

Repeat with the remaining batter, greasing the pan lightly in between batches if necessary.

Step 9

Serve warm with a spread of butter, jam, or honey for a traditional treat. Enjoy immediately or toast lightly later for extra crispiness.
