Ingredients

  • 6 medium-sized Russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 0.5 cups Heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 cups, shredded Sharp cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cups, grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped (optional) Fresh parsley

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin, even rounds about 1/8 inch thick. Use a mandoline slicer for consistent thickness if you have one.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

Step 4

Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens.

Step 5

Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the sauce. Stir well, then remove the saucepan from heat.

Step 6

Stir in 1.5 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese into the sauce until fully melted and smooth.

Step 7

Layer one-third of the potato slices in the bottom of the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping them.

Step 8

Pour one-third of the cheese sauce evenly over the potato layer. Repeat this process twice more, ending with a layer of cheese sauce on top.

Step 9

Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese over the top of the dish.

Step 10

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Step 11

Remove the scalloped potatoes from the oven and allow them to rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
