Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, sliced into thin pats
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9-inch baking dish.

Step 2

Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples into approximately 1/4-inch thick slices. Place them in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

Drizzle the lemon juice over the apple slices and toss gently to prevent browning.

Step 4

In a separate small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well.

Step 5

Layer half of the apple slices in the prepared baking dish. Evenly sprinkle half of the sugar mixture over the apples.

Step 6

Add half of the butter pats on top of the sugared apples.

Step 7

Repeat the layers with the remaining apple slices, sugar mixture, and butter pats.

Step 8

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 9

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the top is lightly golden brown.

Step 10

Let the scalloped apples cool slightly before serving. Serve warm as a side dish or dessert, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
