Ingredients

  • 4 medium Apples (such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons Nutmeg (optional)
  • 0.5 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges, roughly 1/4 inch thick.

Step 2

Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the lemon juice to prevent browning and to add a hint of tartness.

Step 3

Place a large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter until it begins to foam slightly.

Step 4

Add the apple slices to the skillet and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.

Step 5

Sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and a pinch of salt evenly over the apples. Stir well to coat the apples in the sugar and spices.

Step 6

Continue to cook the apples for another 7-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are tender and lightly caramelized.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the vanilla extract. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 8

Remove the skillet from heat and let the apples cool for a few minutes before serving.

Step 9

Serve warm as a topping for pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or ice cream, or enjoy as a side dish or snack!
