Ingredients

  • 1 ball (approximately 1 pound) Pizza dough
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 8 ounces (casings removed) Italian sausage
  • 1 large, thinly sliced Red bell pepper
  • 1 large, thinly sliced Yellow bell pepper
  • 2 cups Grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup Crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoons (optional) Crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons (for dusting) All-purpose flour
  • 3 leaves (optional, for garnish) Fresh basil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 500°F (260°C) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet on the middle rack to heat.

Step 2

On a lightly floured surface, stretch and roll out the pizza dough into a 12-inch round. Set aside.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Sauté the red and yellow bell peppers for 3-4 minutes, until slightly softened. Remove the peppers from the skillet and set aside.

Step 5

In a small bowl, combine the crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to create the tomato sauce.

Step 6

Remove the heated pizza stone or baking sheet from the oven (carefully, as it will be very hot). Dust it lightly with flour or cornmeal to prevent sticking.

Step 7

Transfer the rolled-out pizza dough onto the prepared stone or baking sheet. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

Step 8

Evenly distribute the browned sausage and sautéed bell peppers over the sauce. Sprinkle the crushed red pepper flakes (if using).

Step 9

Top the pizza with grated mozzarella cheese, ensuring even coverage.

Step 10

Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and crisp, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 11

Carefully remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for 2-3 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.

Step 12

Slice and serve the pizza warm. Enjoy!
