Ingredients

  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Dry yeast
  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large Egg
  • 0.5 pound Ground sausage
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme, chopped
  • 0.5 cup Shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 large Egg, for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon Milk, for egg wash

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and dry yeast.

Step 2

Add the warm water, melted butter, and one large egg to the bowl. Mix until a dough forms.

Step 3

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 4

While the dough is rising, heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground sausage. Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks.

Step 5

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and let the sausage cool slightly.

Step 6

In a small bowl, combine the cooled sausage, parsley, rosemary, thyme, and shredded Parmesan cheese. Stir well to combine.

Step 7

Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle, roughly 14x10 inches, on a lightly floured surface.

Step 8

Spread the sausage-herb mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.

Step 9

Starting from one of the longer sides, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seams to seal it tightly and tuck in the ends.

Step 10

Place the rolled dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam side down. Cover with a towel and let it rise for 30 minutes.

Step 11

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 12

In a small bowl, whisk together one egg and a tablespoon of milk to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash evenly over the surface of the bread.

Step 13

Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

Step 14

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
