Ingredients

  • 4 large Russet potatoes
  • 1 pound Ground breakfast sausage
  • 2 cups Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1.5 cups Heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 medium (diced) Yellow onion
  • 2 cloves (minced) Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • 2 tablespoons (chopped, for garnish) Parsley
  • 1 as needed Nonstick cooking spray

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin rounds, about 1/8-inch thick. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks. Remove the sausage from the skillet and drain excess grease, leaving about 1 tablespoon of drippings in the pan.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the butter and diced onion. Sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until the onions are softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute, stirring frequently.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and pour in the heavy cream and milk. Stir in salt, black pepper, and paprika, allowing the mixture to heat through but not boil. Remove from heat.

Step 6

Begin assembling the casserole: arrange a layer of potato slices in the bottom of the prepared casserole dish, slightly overlapping the edges. Sprinkle a portion of the cooked sausage evenly over the potatoes, followed by a layer of shredded cheddar cheese.

Step 7

Pour a portion of the cream mixture over the cheese layer, ensuring it evenly coats the potatoes. Repeat the layering process (potatoes, sausage, cheese, cream mixture) until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.

Step 8

Cover the casserole dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Step 9

After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 10

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Step 11

Serve warm as a standalone dish or pair it with a fresh green salad for a complete meal.
