Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 0.25 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined but do not overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into burger patties about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Once hot, sear the burger patties for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned. Do not cook through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add beef broth, tomato paste, ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar. Whisk together until the sauce is smooth and begins to simmer.

Step 5

Return the browned burger patties to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 25 minutes, flipping the patties halfway through to ensure even cooking.

Step 6

In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Slowly add the slurry to the simmering sauce and stir until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 7

Serve the saucy stewed burgers hot over rice, mashed potatoes, or on toasted buns with your favorite sides.
