Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for sauce)
  • 1.25 cups hot water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder (3 tablespoons), baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Stir until the mixture comes together and is smooth. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.

Step 4

In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and the additional 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish.

Step 5

Pour the hot water over the surface of the batter and cocoa-sugar mixture. Do not stir.

Step 6

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 minutes or until the cake's top is set and the edges start to pull away from the sides of the dish.

Step 7

Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5 minutes. As it cools, the rich fudge sauce will thicken underneath the cake layer.

Step 8

Scoop the cake into serving bowls, ensuring to spoon some of the warm fudge sauce over each portion. Serve plain or with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
