Ingredients

  • 6 medium Russet potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Whole milk
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 2 Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg (optional, freshly grated)
  • 1.5 cups Sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley (chopped, optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them into 1/8-inch thick rounds using a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer. Set aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning while you prepare the sauce.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

Step 4

Slowly add the milk and cream to the roux, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Bring to a gentle simmer and let cook for 3-4 minutes until slightly thickened.

Step 5

Stir in the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Remove the saucepan from the heat and mix in 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese, stirring until melted and smooth.

Step 6

Drain the potato slices and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel.

Step 7

Layer one-third of the sliced potatoes evenly in the greased baking dish. Pour one-third of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Repeat the layering process two more times, ending with the cheese sauce on top.

Step 8

Sprinkle the remaining 0.5 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and all of the Parmesan cheese over the top layer of the potatoes.

Step 9

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

Step 10

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 11

Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy the cheesy, creamy goodness of Sarah's Scalloped Potatoes!
