Ingredients

  • 1 piece Pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 1 cup Pecan halves
  • 1 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 cup White granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Heavy cream

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples into thin wedges. Toss them in a bowl with lemon juice to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar, white sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth. Add the vanilla extract and mix well.

Step 4

Add the apple slices to the skillet and cook for 5–7 minutes until slightly softened. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Step 5

Place the pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and crimp the edges as desired.

Step 6

Spoon the cooled apple mixture evenly into the pie crust. Sprinkle the pecan halves over the apple filling.

Step 7

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and heavy cream to make an egg wash. Brush the edges of the pie crust with the egg wash.

Step 8

Cover the pie loosely with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning, and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25–35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Step 9

Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing to allow the filling to set.

Step 10

Serve warm or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.
