Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 1.25 cups Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 0.5 cup Freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon Grated orange zest
  • 0.5 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup Dark chocolate chips (optional for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered sugar (optional for dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan. Line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar and softened butter. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, cream them together until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Step 5

Mix in the freshly squeezed orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract. The mixture may look slightly curdled at this stage, which is normal.

Step 6

Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet ingredients, starting and ending with the dry mixture. Mix gently after each addition to avoid overmixing.

Step 7

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth out the surface with a spatula.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 9

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 10

Once the cake has cooled, garnish with dark chocolate chips or dust with powdered sugar if desired. Slice and serve!
