Ingredients

  • 28 oz San Marzano tomatoes (whole, peeled)
  • 3 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion (finely chopped)
  • 4 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Crushed red pepper flakes
  • 4 leaves Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Begin by preparing your ingredients: finely chop the onion and mince the garlic.

Step 2

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until it shimmers.

Step 3

Add the chopped onion to the pan and sauté for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 5

Add the tomato paste to the pan and stir well, cooking for 2 minutes to deepen the flavor.

Step 6

Pour the San Marzano tomatoes into the pan along with their juices. Use a wooden spoon to break them up into smaller chunks.

Step 7

Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and crushed red pepper flakes. Mix well to combine.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. The sauce will thicken as it cooks.

Step 9

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed. If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to puree it to your desired consistency.

Step 10

Remove the sauce from heat. If desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving. Enjoy!
