Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 cup Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups Beef broth
  • 0.5 cup Red wine
  • 1 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 0.5 tsp Fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 cup Mushrooms, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp Chopped parsley, for garnish

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

Step 2

Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties about 1/2-inch thick.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil along with the butter. Once the butter has melted, stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.

Step 5

Gradually whisk in the beef broth and red wine, making sure there are no lumps. Add the tomato paste and mix until the sauce is smooth.

Step 6

Stir in the thyme leaves and sliced mushrooms. Simmer the sauce for 5-7 minutes, or until it begins to thicken.

Step 7

Return the beef patties to the skillet, spooning some of the sauce over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the patties to cook through.

Step 8

Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
