Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef (80/20)
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces Mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are well incorporated but do not overmix.

Step 2

Shape the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, about 3/4 inch thick. Set aside.

Step 3

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until both sides are browned. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate. They will continue cooking in the gravy later.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium and add butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook for 2-3 minutes until they start to soften.

Step 5

Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and continue to cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are golden brown and the onions are caramelized.

Step 6

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring continuously for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 7

Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add soy sauce and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and let the gravy thicken, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 8

Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon some of the gravy over the patties. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Let the patties simmer in the gravy for 10-12 minutes, or until cooked through (internal temperature should be 160°F).

Step 9

Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with additional salt and black pepper if needed.

Step 10

Serve the Salisbury steak hot, smothered in gravy, and garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetable side dish.
