Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.5 lb ground pork
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1 unit large egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 units yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for sauce)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, but do not overwork the mixture.

Step 2

Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. You should get approximately 16 meatballs.

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Working in batches if necessary, cook the meatballs until browned on all sides, about 6-8 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and golden brown, about 15 minutes.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to create a smooth sauce. Add 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and stir well. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step 7

Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the onion gravy. Cover the skillet and let the meatballs simmer in the sauce for 20 minutes, or until they are cooked through.

Step 8

Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Step 9

Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired, and serve the meatballs hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
