Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium, finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves, minced garlic
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 8 ounces, sliced mushrooms
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped (optional, for garnish) parsley

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined but avoid overworking the meat.

Step 2

Shape the mixture into 4 evenly sized patties.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Sauté the sliced mushrooms and any extra chopped onion for 5-6 minutes, or until softened.

Step 5

Sprinkle flour over the sautéed mushrooms and stir well to coat. Cook for 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.

Step 6

Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add butter to the skillet and let the mixture simmer for 2-3 minutes until the gravy thickens.

Step 7

Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Reduce heat to low, cover the skillet, and let them simmer for an additional 10-12 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked through.

Step 8

Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired, and serve immediately with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
