Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 6 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh sage leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil (for brushing)
  • 6 leaves Additional sage leaves (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Stir to mix well.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter over low heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm but not hot (approximately 110°F/43°C).

Step 3

Gradually pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring to combine.

Step 4

Add the egg and chopped sage leaves, and mix until the batter is smooth.

Step 5

Stir in the remaining 2 cups of flour, a little at a time, until the dough is soft and slightly sticky.

Step 6

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough sticks, lightly flour your hands and the surface as needed.

Step 7

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 8

Punch down the dough and turn it out onto the floured surface. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.

Step 9

Arrange the dough balls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced about 1 inch apart. Cover with the kitchen towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 10

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 11

If desired, place a fresh sage leaf on top of each roll for garnish and press it gently into the dough.

Step 12

Brush the rolls lightly with olive oil for a golden finish.

Step 13

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 14

Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy fresh or with a pat of butter!
