Ingredients

  • 2 cups Basmati rice
  • 0.25 teaspoons Saffron threads
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground turmeric
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground onion powder
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 4 cups Chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter (or oil)
  • 0.25 cups Water (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the basmati rice in cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.

Step 2

In a small bowl, combine the saffron threads with 1/4 cup of warm water. Let it steep for 5-10 minutes to bring out its color and flavor.

Step 3

In a medium-sized saucepan or pot, heat the butter (or oil) over medium heat until melted.

Step 4

Add the ground turmeric, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt to the melted butter. Stir for 30 seconds to toast the spices, releasing their flavor.

Step 5

Add the rinsed and drained basmati rice to the pot. Stir well to coat the rice evenly with the spiced butter.

Step 6

Pour the chicken or vegetable broth into the pot, along with the saffron-infused water. Stir gently to combine.

Step 7

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and let the rice simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed.

Step 8

Once the rice is cooked, turn off the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. This step allows the rice to steam and become fluffy.

Step 9

Fluff the rice with a fork and serve warm as a flavorful side dish or as a base for your favorite meal.
