Ingredients

  • 1 head (medium, about 2 pounds) red cabbage
  • 2 medium (preferably tart, like Granny Smith) apples
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons (light or dark) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Remove the outer leaves from the cabbage and slice it into thin shreds. Discard the core.

Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks.

Step 3

Peel and finely chop the onion.

Step 4

In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt the butter over medium heat.

Step 5

Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent.

Step 6

Add the shredded red cabbage to the pot and toss to coat in the butter and onions.

Step 7

Stir in the chopped apples, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and ground cloves.

Step 8
