Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef or lamb
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 150 grams frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 250 milliliters beef or chicken stock
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 800 grams potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 50 grams butter
  • 100 milliliters milk
  • 100 grams grated cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 teaspoons paprika (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).

Step 2

Peel and dice the potatoes, then place them in a large pot. Fill with water, add a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil. Cook for about 15 minutes, or until tender.

Step 3

While the potatoes are boiling, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and diced carrots. Sauté for 5 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute.

Step 5

Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 7–8 minutes.

Step 6

Stir in the tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well to coat the meat and vegetables.

Step 7

Pour in the beef or chicken stock and bring the mixture to a simmer. Add the frozen peas, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes so the flavors can meld together. Stir occasionally.

Step 8

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 9

Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a large baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 10

Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat mixture, spreading it smoothly to create an even layer. Use a fork to create textured lines on the surface (this helps the top crisp up nicely).

Step 11

Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes.

Step 12

Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.

Step 13

Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, and garnish with a sprinkle of paprika before serving if desired.
