Ingredients

  • 4 large Yellow onions
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoons Kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon Brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Balsamic vinegar (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the onions and slice them thinly into even rings or half-moons, about 1/8 inch thick.

Step 2

In a large skillet or sauté pan, warm the butter and olive oil over medium heat until the butter is melted.

Step 3

Add the sliced onions to the pan and stir to coat them in the butter and oil mixture.

Step 4

Sprinkle the onions with kosher salt to help draw out their moisture.

Step 5

Cook the onions over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. They will start to soften and release their juices.

Step 6

Lower the heat to medium-low and continue cooking, stirring every 5-7 minutes to prevent sticking. This process will take 30-35 minutes.

Step 7

If desired, add the brown sugar about halfway through cooking to intensify the sweetness.

Step 8

Once the onions are golden brown and deeply caramelized, add the balsamic vinegar (if using) and stir well to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits.

Step 9

Remove the caramelized onions from the heat and let them cool slightly before serving or storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
