Ingredients

  • 2 pounds round steak
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

Directions

Step 1

Trim excess fat from the round steak and cut it into serving-sized portions.

Step 2

In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Dredge the pieces of steak in the seasoned flour, shaking off any excess.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the dredged steak pieces and sear until browned on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Step 4

Remove the steak from the skillet and set it aside on a plate.

Step 5

Reduce heat to medium and add the sliced onion to the skillet. Sauté for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are softened and lightly browned.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the beef broth and water, stirring to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 7

Return the steak to the skillet, nestling it into the liquid. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer gently for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the steak is tender.

Step 8

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water to make a slurry.

Step 9

Once the steak is tender, remove it from the skillet and set it aside on a warm plate.

Step 10

Gradually stir the cornstarch slurry into the skillet, cooking over medium heat until the gravy thickens, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 11

Return the steak to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top to coat.

Step 12

Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice, alongside a vegetable of your choice. Enjoy!
