Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy, based on preference)
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion (finely chopped)
  • 4 large Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 28 ounces Crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces Tomato sauce
  • 6 ounces Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 teaspoons Dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons Dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 1 whole Bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley (chopped, optional garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking the meat into small pieces with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain off any excess grease.

Step 3

Transfer the cooked meats to the crock pot.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the chopped onions and cook over medium heat until softened, about 4-5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Transfer the onion and garlic mixture to the crock pot.

Step 6

To the crock pot, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Stir to combine.

Step 7

Add the dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, and bay leaf to the crock pot. Stir thoroughly to incorporate all the seasonings.

Step 8

Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours or on high heat for 3-4 hours, until the sauce is rich and well blended. Stir occasionally if possible.

Step 9

Before serving, remove the bay leaf and discard it.

Step 10

Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired.

Step 11

Serve the sauce over your favorite cooked pasta or use as a base for other Italian-inspired dishes.
