Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 28 ounces Crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 0.25 cup Fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 0.25 cup Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Freshly ground black pepper
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 0.25 cup Water (if needed)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat until the butter is melted and starts to sizzle.

Step 2

Add the minced garlic and chopped onion to the pan, sautéing for 3-4 minutes until the onion is soft and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another 1-2 minutes to caramelize the paste slightly for added depth of flavor.

Step 4

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir well to combine. Allow the mixture to come to a simmer.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and add the heavy cream, stirring constantly to create a creamy base for the sauce.

Step 6

Mix in the fresh basil, parsley, oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in up to 1/4 cup of water to reach your desired consistency.

Step 8

Once the sauce has thickened and the flavors are well blended, stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until it is melted and fully incorporated.

Step 9

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve immediately over freshly cooked gnocchi, garnished with additional Parmesan and a sprig of basil if desired.
