Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 medium potatoes
  • 2 large carrot
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 sheets aluminum foil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your grill or oven to 400°F (200°C). If using a campfire, allow the fire to develop steady, hot coals.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and carrots, then slice them into thin, bite-sized pieces. Chop the onion into thin wedges or small pieces as desired.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix the salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to create a seasoning blend.

Step 4

Take the ground beef and divide it into four equal portions. Shape each into a loose patty, about 1/2-inch thick.

Step 5

Prepare the foil sheets (approximately 12 inches by 12 inches each), and lightly brush the centers with olive oil to prevent sticking.

Step 6

On each sheet of foil, layer 1/4 of the potatoes, carrots, and onion. Sprinkle the vegetables with a pinch of the seasoning blend.

Step 7

Place a ground beef patty on top of each vegetable pile. Sprinkle additional seasoning over the patty and add 1 tablespoon of butter on top.

Step 8

Fold the foil over the ingredients to create a sealed packet. Make sure the edges are tightly crimped to lock in the steam and juices.

Step 9

Place the packets on the grill, a baking sheet (if using an oven), or directly onto campfire coals. Cook for 20-25 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until the meat is fully cooked and the vegetables are tender.

Step 10

Carefully open one packet to check for doneness. Be cautious, as steam will escape.

Step 11

Serve the silver turtles directly in their foil packets for a rustic presentation, or plate the contents if preferred.
