Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium, finely chopped onion
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoons turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Set aside to drain.

Step 2

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a medium-sized pot over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the finely chopped onion to the pot and sauté until golden brown, about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic, ground cumin, and turmeric powder. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the rinsed and drained rice to the pot. Stir gently to coat the rice in the aromatic mixture.

Step 6

Pour in the 2 cups of water, add the teaspoon of salt, and bring the mixture to a boil.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 8

After 10 minutes, stir in the frozen peas. Cover again and continue to cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the peas are cooked through.

Step 9

Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 10

Fluff the rice with a fork, then stir in chopped cilantro, black pepper, and a tablespoon of lemon juice.

Step 11

Serve warm as a main dish or a side, garnished with extra cilantro if desired.
